How does bacteria end up in tap water?
It is often the case that bacteria enters the drinking water supply through house pipes, and thus the water quality can quickly fall short of the required standards without anyone noticing. Deposits and biofilms in the pipes create an ideal breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and germs. Legionella bacteria multiply rapidly in warm water because a temperature of 20-50 degrees celcius is optimum for their survival and growth. Bacteria like pseudomonas on the other hand are frequently found in "dead legs" or pipes which rarely see the flow of water.
Why should you test your water for bacteria?
The build up of biofilms in pipes is difficult to avoid, and so it is the responsibility of the consumer to keep an eye on any weak points by regularly checking the tap water. Test strips and rapid home tests are often imprecise and unreliable, making laboratory testing the smarter choice. Pseudomonads or bacteria such as E.coli and enterococci can cause substantial gastrointestinal problems and infections, along with serious secondary complications. The presence of germs in drinking water poses a particular risk to families with children, babies, or other high-risk groups such as the elderly, sick or immunocompromised.
Which Bacteria Test Kits are there to choose from?
The Bacteria BASIC Test provides a quick overview of the water quality and lets you know if there are coliform bacteria or Escherichia coli bacteria (also known as E.coli) in your tap water.
The Bacteria PLUS tests your water for 5 contaminants, including E.coli and coliform bacteria as well as enterococci, a common cause of infection (e.g. urinary tract infections). The total viable count is measured at room temperature (22°C) and body temperature (36°C). Ice packs are included in the Bacteria PLUS and PREMIUM test kits so that the test results are not skewed by the ambient temperature. The samples are kept cool during the transport process, which ensures the results are accurate.
The PREMIUM Bacteria Test checks for pseudomonas. This bacteria, also known as a hospital pathogen, is particularly resistant and can quickly lead to dangerous lung infections in those with weak immune systems. This is a good choice for anyone who wants or needs to stay on the safe side.
Pathogens in water can also cause infection when the water is used for everyday hygiene.
Legionella reside in hot water pipes and can be released into the air through shower fittings in the form of steam. During a shower this bacteria can be inhaled and can cause serious lung infections in humans, commonly known as Legionnaire's disease or Pontiac fever. if left untreated, Legionnaire's disease can be fatal. The Legionella Test quickly reveals if your water is contaminated by legionella.
Open wounds in the mouth can pose a health threat if bacteria enters them through water. It is therefore recommended that dental practices carry out regular water testing for bacteria. The Department of Health recommends regular risk assessments to ensure that the water supplied to patients is of high quality. The IVARIO Dental Test analyses tap water in compliance with ISO 17025.
How does your Bacteria Test with IVARIO work?
